May 28, 2009 - OpenHRE(tm) Health Information Exchange Communities cite exceptional return on investment in a recent Government Health IT article "Keep an Open Mind", by John Moore. Community members Kate Watson of the Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE), Gijs Van Oort, PhD., Director of Health Access San Antonio (HASA), and Craig Mathews, Director, Bayou Teche Community Health Network (ByNet) are interviewed.
"If time-savings and adaptability are key benefits for some, cost may be the biggest driver of open source. The lack of licensing fees means organizations can deploy health IT without incurring the upfront cost of proprietary software. Without open source, for example, Kansas would have been hard pressed to fund a network for its population health program."
